Project Status
January 31, 2008: OSU Wireless Phase II Completed
Over 3690 access points (APs) have been provisioned. Student Gathering Areas (SGAs) in Jennings Hall and Central Classroom will be completed during installation of customer-requested APs. Final presentation to project governance made on January 30, 2008. Phase II is now closed.
December 31, 2007: Final OSU Wireless Phase II Activities in Progress
Over 3500 access points have been provisioned. Installation in last phase for the College of Veterinary Medicine. Jennings Hall installation scheduled (Jennings installation includes seven APs for pool classroom SGAs). This completes installations for Phase II of OSU Wireless. Training for four departmental Wi-Fi administrators completed. Final presentation to project governance and project close now planned for January ’08 (delayed due to quarter end and holidays).
November 30, 2007: Final Student Gathering Areas Indentified
3452 APs have been provisioned. Student Gathering Area (SGA) installation completed in the Wilce Student Health Center. Customer installations continue in the College of Veterinary Medicine (contain SGAs). SGAs were identified at the recently remodeled Jennings Hall and will be completed with customer installations. MMS 2.5.0.1 was implemented in November. Training for departmental Wi-Fi administrators is in progress.
October 31, 2007: Final OSU Wireless Phase II Activities in Progress
3383 APs have been provisioned. Customer installations at the College of Veterinary Medicine (contain Student Gathering Areas) are in progress.
Survey completed at the recently remodeled Jennings Hall. At the Wilce Student Health Center, an additional wiring pull is needed to connect the installed AP to the wiring closet. Aruba MMS 2.5 with additional maintenance will be implemented in production during early November.Project closure planned following presentation to governance in December.
September 30, 2007: Final OSU Wireless Phase II Activities Planned
3297 APs have been provisioned. Installation of Student Gathering Areas completed in RPAC. Installation begins October 1 for the College of Veterinary Medicine. Wireless management software upgrade (to Aruba MMS version 2.5) is planned for October. Following this implementation, a final presentation to Project Governance will be scheduled to demonstrate departmental management of access points and to close Phase II of the OSU Wireless Project.
August 31, 2007: Student Gathering Areas completed
Phase II SGA installation is now completed with the exception of the following locations: Veterinary Medicine buildings (plan to do during customer request installation activities), RPAC (to be installed by Student Affairs IT) and Wilce Student Health Center (to be planned in cooperation with Student Affairs IT). 3202 APs have been provisioned.
July 31, 2007: Student Gathering Areas, Project Closure in August
Wireless guest access, via the 'OSUGUEST' SSID is now available on all Aruba access points (APs). Notification was sent to the OSU Wireless Project Core Team, DISTCONS and DNAs. Wireless installations were completed in PAES, Celeste Lab and Bolz Hall. Installation of remaining Student Gathering Areas by contractors is now scheduled to begin on 8/6/07. 3074 Aruba APs have now been provisioned. Closure of Phase II of the OSU Wireless Project is anticipated by the end of August.
June 29, 2007: Student Gathering Areas, Distributed Management and Wireless VoIP
Access Point (AP) installation completed in Stillman Hall, and the Edison Joining Technology Center. Installation at PAES started. Student gathering areas (SGAs) completed in the Wexner Center. Installation of remaining SGAs was delayed until July since we were awaiting contractor resources (contract has been awarded.
Distributed management functionality (made available via MMS 2.1) has been provisioned for Student Affairs IT. The 'OSUVOICE' ssid (for support of wireless Voice over IP) has been pushed to all non-dorm APs. Planning with Student Affairs IT needs to be completed for future deployment of wireless VoIP to dorms.
Aruba OS was upgraded to Tech Build T3.1.0.11. Nearly 2900 APs have now been provisioned.
May 31, 2007: Student Gathering Areas
Installation completed at the Science and Engineering Library, Animal Sciences Building and Mount Hall. Installation began at Stillman Hall.
Service Level Agreements (SLAs) have been completed with several customers.
The backlog of customer requests and remaining student gathering areas
(SGAs) required a new RFP for contactors for wiring/installation. An additional student will be hired to assist in site surveys and trouble ticket support.
All controllers were upgraded to ArubaOS version 3.1.0.8 on 5/11/07. MMS version 2.1 was released to production the week of 5/20/07.
April 30, 2007: Student Gathering Areas and Distributed Management
Access point installation was completed in 1430 Lincoln Tower (library space). Installation in Wexner Center library spaces require fiber termination to the building (completion planned the week of 4/30/07). Installation at the Science and Engineering Library is scheduled for the week of 4/30/07.
Pre-installation surveys completed of the Veterinary Hospital buildings. Installations for Veterinary Hospital and College of Medicine are awaiting completion of discussions with the customers. A review of remaining student gathering areas was completed and additional pooled classrooms were identified. Per Bob Corbin (Co-Project Director), outdoor areas will be added to the project scope. These are currently being surveyed for coverage.
Functionality to support distributed management (via MMS version 2.1) is currently being tested. We are anticipating that that this will go into production in May.
March 30, 2007: Library Student Gathering Areas, Scott Labs, Baker Systems
Wireless hotspots were installed in the following library spaces: Ackerman Library, Library Book Depository and Orton Hall (Geology Library). The last two library installations (in Lincoln Tower and Wexner Center) will be completed in early April. New wireless coverage is now available at Scott Labs and Baker Systems Engineering. Approximately one dozen student-gathering locations remain requiring installation - most are a few access points each.
The wireless network was successfully upgraded to ArubaOS 3.1. Student Affairs completed AP installations at Buckeye Village apartments. They plan to begin installation in April of access points in student residences at regional campuses.
February 28, 2007: Additional Student Gathering Area Coverage
Installation of access points (APs) was completed in Central Classroom Building, Metro High School and Scott Labs. Baker Systems Engineering is in progress. Additional coverage for student gathering areas, such as library spaces, is planned for completion in March.
Process for scheduling site surveys, generating Service Level Agreements
(SLAs) and scheduling installation have been developed and was implemented for customer requests going forward (post-OSU Wireless Phase II).
February 1, 2007: Student Gathering/VLAN Pooling
Swaps of legacy access points (APs) in student gathering areas were completed (with the exception of Postle Hall and RPAC, which are in progress). Installation of APs to provide additional student gathering coverage is in progress and are planned for completion in February. New surveys commenced in January. The Aruba VLAN pooling feature was implemented. VLAN pooling evenly distributes allocated wireless IP addresses and allows easy addition of addresses (via new IP subnets) to the pool.
January 2, 2007: Student Gathering/ArubaOS 3.0.1
Swaps of legacy access points (APs) in student gathering areas were largely completed in December. APs to provide additional coverage will be installed in January. Wiring of Buckeye Village for future APs was completed in December. Wiring for APs in regional campus housing was also completed. Surveys and AP installation for customer requests will begin next month.
The OSU Wireless network was upgraded to the latest release (ArubaOS 3.0.1). In addition, OSUNet core changes were implemented to support VLAN pooling in the future via a Layer-3 address scheme.
December 1, 2006: Student Affairs/Student Gathering
Results of the successful Proof of Concept testing for Aruba Networks were published to the University community. Currently, nearly 1900 access points (APs) are on-line, largely in student residence halls.
AP wiring was completed and tested in the Buckeye Village apartment units.
Planning for installation of access points is in progress. Wiring was also completed in student housing at Newark and Mansfield regional campuses.
Wiring of Wooster housing is planned for December.
Wireless equipment installation for student gathering areas (i.e. various hotspots around main campus) has begun. Plan is to complete swaps of existing equipment with Aruba APs by December 31.
November 3, 2006: Student Affairs/Student Gathering
Access point (AP) installation was completed in Jones Graduate Tower and in the scholarship residences (German, Hanley, Pomerene, Fecko and Pennsylvania Place). APs were also installed in the Buckeye Village administrative area and the Buckeye Village Community Center. Wiring has commenced in the Buckeye Village apartment units.
Working with Student Affairs IT, apartment and resident halls were identified in regional campuses (Newark, Mansfield and Wooster) for wireless installation.
Planning and equipment orders for student gathering areas (i.e. various hotspots around main campus) have been completed.
October 6, 2000: Student Affairs wireless installation
Nearly 1700 access points (APs) were installed in 28 student residence buildings in time for start of fall session. AP installation in Jones Graduate Tower is in progress. Planning and equipment orders for student gathering areas (i.e. various hotspots around main campus) are in progress.
September 11, 2006: Student Affairs wireless installation
Surveys are 100% complete for the wireless network in the residence halls. Wiring has been completed in 24 buildings. 53% of the access points have been installed. Controllers and network will be installed week of 9/11/06. In total, over 2000 access points will be installed at the completion of this project.
September 7, 2006: Proof of Concept in Hagerty Hall
On September 7, 2006, the Aruba wireless proof of concept was held in Hagerty Hall. Communication went out to the university DNA community, OSU Wireless Core team, and OSU Wireless Advisory team members for support and over 80 people participated. Stress testing provided valuable data that will be used to fine tune the network. Users provided input through an online survey that will be reviewed by Aruba and Core Team members. Core Team will provide follow up to outstanding issues.

August 2006: Purchase order released to Versatile Networks
On August 14, 2006, The Ohio State University awarded Versatile Networks a purchase order for Aruba hardware and software in support of the OSU Wireless project. Equipment orders for the Proof of Concept and Student Affairs network were placed the week of August 21, 2006.
January 2006:TELR Holds Successful Videocast
January 17 more than 40 people attended a live national videocast on "Improving Campus Communications with Wireless Technologies." The 2-hour event, sponsored by Technology Enhanced Learning & Research (TELR) was held at the Digital Union. TELR spearheads the wireless pedagogy portion of the OSU Wireless Project.
October/November/December 2005: Project Teams Prepare For Phase II
Having successfully launched Phase I, the OSU Wireless Project Governance Teams are focusing their efforts on Phase II of the project.
Phase II includes the procurement and deployment of more advanced wireless technology, increased number of wireless hot spot locations around campus, and pedagogical initiatives for faculty and IT staff.
The first portion of Phase II is expected to launch by fall quarter, September 2006. Additional build out will continue through year 2010.

September 2005: Phase I Launched!
The first portion of Phase I of the OSU Wireless Project officially launched September 19th. OSU faculty, staff, students and college / department sponosored guests now have free wireless access at select locations around campus.
The second part of Phase I will be completed by the end of October and includes bringing up OSUWireless Hot Spots in a limited number of student gatheringa areas within libraries, the two unions and few other locations: Conversion Schedule
The online location map has been updated to indicate the active OSUWireless Hot Spots on campus. To use wireless access at these select locations, you must use your OSUWireless ID and password; and configure your mobile device to operate properly on the network. August 2005: Phase I Conversions Underway
OSUWeb.net wireless access is being converted to "OSUWireless Hot Spots" September 14th thru September 19th: OSUWeb.net AP Conversion Schedule
OSUWeb.net wireless access will immediately discontinue as the access points are migrated to the new service. Notifications to OSUWeb.net customers and Department Network Administrators have been sent concerning this service change and how to migrate to the new set up.
Phase I will also include coverage of a limited number of student gathering locations, scheduled to begin after September 19th. In total, more than 200 wireless hot spots in over 60 campus locations will be available for use by Ohio State University faculty, staff, students and college/department sponsored guests.
Wireless devices will need to be configured to work with the new wireless service and a pre-assigned OSUWireless ID and password will be required for log on. Instructional information has been posted to: "Connect!".
May/June/July 2005: Phase I Roll Out Planned For September 2005
Phase I of the wireless network project for The OSU Columbus campus will roll out by the start of fall quarter classes in September 2005. This first phase will include the conversion of more than 190 existing access points (currently utilized for OSUWeb.net) to create wireless hotspots in over 60 buildings across campus. A limited number of primary student gathering areas will also be converted to wireless hotspots during this phase. Additional information concerning wireless hotspot locations, how to connect and more will be posted to the "Connect!" section of this web site in the coming months.
April 2005: Project Governance Committees Formed; Site Visits Planned
Project governance structure committees are scheduled to hold their kick off meetings during May 2005.
Project Directors Bob Corbin and Chuck Morrow-Jones, Pedagogy representative Joanne Dehoney and Project Manager Tracey Richardson are scheduled to perform site visits to meet with key representatives from colleges, select support units and student governments. The site visits will begin May 2005.
March 2005: Proposed Project Governance Structure Unveiled
At the March 10th Wireless Summit, a proposed governance structure for the OSU Wireless Network Project was unveiled to attendees. The project goverenance structure attempts to balance the community’s desire for participation and need for reassurance of interoperability and accountability, with the project’s need for input regarding customer requirements, wireless technology experiences, endorsement and means of arbitration. Representatives for the committees are expected to be identified by the end of April 2005.
January & February 2005: Wireless Infrastructure Proposal Approved by University Leaders
A proposal to build a campus-wide wireless network infrastructure for The Ohio State University Columbus campus we presented to University leaders, including: Coordinating Council, Council of Deans, Senior Fiscal Officers and the University Senate Fiscal Committee. These leaders gave their vote of confidence by approving the proposal and committing funding to build and expand the campus-wide wireless network over 5 years.
